“You never get tired of watching the sea (=Meer) and with good movies it should be the same.” Matthias Santiago Staehle (Founder of Meerfilm, 2005)

1975 - 1997
Matthias Santiago Staehle was born in Esslingen, Germany, to a chilean mother and german father. His first artistic interest was in music, playing in various punk bands during and after graduating Highschool. The fascination with photography (only using analogous techniques to this day) lead to a growing interest in cinema, and after gaining some insight as a projectionist, he launched a Filmfestival about handicapped people in his hometown Esslingen, during his civil service.

1998 - 2005
He went on to work as an assistant for several photographers, with shootings in Mallorca, Denver and Hamburg. Being a passionate self-taught cook, his favored course of studies was a class called “Film and Cooking” by Peter Kubelka at the University of Fine Arts (Städelschule) in Frankfurt, but since it was going to be changed dramatically due to the retirement of Mr. Kubelka, he chose to study film (under Helke Sander, Franz Winzentsen, Rüdiger Neumann, Gerd Roscher and Wim Wenders) at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg instead. He made his diploma with distinction, with Wim Wenders as his main Examiner.

2005 - 2007
After shooting a lot of short films, several musicvideos and two TV-commercials, he founded his own production company "MEERFILM", and wrote, directed and independently produced his first feature film “Mikrofan” (Fan of the mic), which premiered at the 41st International Hofer Filmdays.

2007 - 2010
Alongside working on different feature film screenplays, one of them funded by the FFHSH Film Commission (Hamburg), he exhibits his short films, videoworks, drawings and photographs in various galleries (Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart). Currently he is working on completing a series of shorts, which started with “amor o muerte” (Love or Death, 30 min.), continued with “Liebe oder Nichts” (Love or Nothing, 15 min.) which will premiere at the 44th International Hofer Filmdays and also received an invitation to the 10th Flensburg Shortfilmdays. | | |
